I am planning to do a fast for 7 days in order to rapidly lose some weight. But the main reason I am planning on fasting is so that I can get rid of my bad eating habits and have a completely different approach to food. After my fast I plan on starting a diet high in fruits and vegetables and moderate amounts of meat. All I plan to drink on the fast is lemon juice with filtered water and honey and lots of water, but no solid food. Has anyone had experiences with fasts? Is is hard to last a week on a fast? I am a little worried about possible side effects such that might happen. Did anyone experience any as a result of fasting? Please only answer if you have had experience with fasts. Hopefully you will give me some motivation:)

This would be rather a silly thing to do and you will achieve precisely nothing at the end of it. In that week, you will only lose fluid and the fat stored in your liver.

When your body is deprived of food, the first place it goes to is your glycogen store. This is a carbohydrate formed from sugar stored in your liver and muscles. We have 1-2lbs of glycogen which holds about 4 times it’s weight in water. When all that has gone, you will have lost up to 7-10lbs.

As soon as you start eating again, your body will cling on to the food fearing it may have to go without food again and the weight will be put back on. It really is rather pointless!

Fat takes a lot longer to burn up than food or glycogen.

This is why people spend years losing half a stone and put it all back on again, sometimes in as little as a week. What you’re essentially doing is just using up and replacing your glycogen, hardly touching your fat stores.

The first few pounds of a diet is purely water loss.

To conclude; there is as ever only ONE effective way to lose weight, a healthy reduced calorie diet, combined with daily vigorous exercise. It takes time and commitment. There are no quick fixes.

Just a plain stupid idea. You’ll feel lousy, and it won’t work.

When you fast, the initial few pounds of rapid wt loss is just from water. Ongoing fasts lead to breakdown of your muscle tissue. As soon as the fast is over, your bodies metabolism goes into fat storage mode big time. As we evolved to be hunter-gatherers, there literally was feast or famine, so our bodies have been engineered to store fat in times of excess. Do you ever watch Survivor? The contestants are unrecognizable on the final reunion show because they’ve all regained all the weight they lost, plus another 10-20 lbs.

You would do better to just start healthier eating habits right now, and don’t waste your time doing a fast. You need to make healthier choices for life, not just during some fad diet or fast that is unsustainable in the long term.
