Could my toddler be losing weight because of teething?
My daughter (17 months) doesn’t want to eat, and she has lost two pounds recently. Sometimes her stools are runny and slimy. A sample was taken to a lab, but they did not find anything abnormal. Currently, several of her molars are beginning to show up, and I know she is in some discomfort. Could this be the cause of her weight loss? And what about the mucusy stools? Could it be saliva?
You sound like a good, smart momma. What did the doctor say about this? If he wasn’t concerned, he should have at least given you suggestions to help your daughter through this. Give her some crushed ice or all natural popsicles. The orajel didn’t work for my daughter, but it might for yours. Try pedia-sure, or find some soft food. Maybe find a flavor of babyfood she’ll eat. Don’t try to get her to eat solid foods when her teeth are hurting.
Hope this helps and good luck!
Children do refuse to eat around that age. My son did that and I took him to the dr. His dr. said not to worry about it unless he was seriously losing weight and that he would eat if he gets hungry enough. Try to offer foods you know she likes and maybe she’ll take a bite or two.
every pediatrician will tell you no
lots of moms will tell you yes
the weight loss just could be due to a weird picky stage…but the runny stools, the loss of appetite, the constant drooling….all come with the molars. just try to alleviate the discomfort (tylenol, icy washclothes, baby orajel) and keep her hydrated. keep a close eye on the weight loss and if she loses anymore weight…take her back to the pediatrician.
My daughter (three now) went through periods where she didn’t want to eat much, and then it was like she would start eating a lot again. Just keep in contact with your pediatrician, and if he is not alarmed than you shouldn’t be. Children can go through many fazes and I would say a couple of pounds either way isn’t a big deal. Just make sure that it doesn’t get to be more than that.
my son always got disinterested in food when he was teething…even when i set out his favorite dish, he would just fuss and pick at it. as long as your daughter isn’t displaying any other signs of distress(high fever, uncontrollable crying, diarrhea, etc.) she should be fine. if you already took her to the doctor and got a lab done, you are doing great. i always took my son to the doctor for things that turned out to be nothing serious, but it is always better to be safe than sorry. good luck.
